Youth and community workers

UNISON represents more than 15,000 members in youth and community work. We know that youth and community services offer a vital way for young people to grow and tackle the challenges of approaching adulthood. They also form an essential part of local council's strategies for tackling poverty, inequality and the causes of crime.

The 2008 pay claim for Youth and Community Workers was submitted to the Employers on 15 April 2008. The Staff Side agreed to submit the claim earlier this year to enable the employers to consult their constituent authorities and respond at the JNC scheduled for 26 June. Two further dates have been set for JNC meetings to continue pay negotiations if necessary, before the pay anniversary date of 1 September.

2008 Pay and Conditions Submission to the JNC for Youth and Community Workers' Staff Side Claim

The main elements of the claim are:

a substantial pay rise on main grades and allowances reflecting the historic link with teachers' salaries and the development of a graduate entry profession with a licence to practice and to help restore and maintain the living standards of JNC staff

significant improvements in London and Area Allowances

a reduction in the number of overlapping pay points between the Youth Support Worker and Professional Range

further work to promote JNC in the voluntary sector and to ensure there is no development of a two-tier workforce
