This year’s theme for International Women’s Day is #PledgeForParity. The World Economic Forum predicted in 2015 that it would take until 2133 to entirely close the gender gap.
Certainly in this country we can see examples of gender inequality. Women have not faced a greater threat to their financial security and rights in living memory. Decades of steady, albeit slow, progress on equality for women is being dismantled, as cuts to women’s jobs and the benefits and services they rely on turn back time on women’s equality.
But UNISON isn’t sitting idly by. UNISON’s women’s member group campaigns for equality in the workplace and for improvements to women’s rights. It also supports campaigns aimed at improving women’s lives.
As a member of UNISON, you have the support and guidance of thousands of other women members, who face the same workplace challenges as you. If you encounter issues such as the gender pay gap or denial of maternity rights, UNISON can help with practical information, support and legal advice. As Women’s Officer I am leading on these issues at a Branch level, and I’m always happy to hear from you
